Bus driver to work 2023-1-20
In the past week I’m taking the bus to work. It’s a one hour drive with this guy.
And there’s something that amazes me about this driver. The thing is that he never honks. OK, almost.
He honks but only when he really has to.
Like when some suicidal driver tries to cut him off at the last second with an old mini. He’s doing that to make the passengers feel better.
And you have to understand that honking in Israel is considered really ok. I mean it might be even part of the culture. People don’t like it, but we all do it, much more than in other places. So in that sense, this guy is like an alien. And he drives a bus! Imagine that. He has a lot of hours to be upset. But he chooses, I think, to drive this way.
Now you might think that we get there 20% slower. But no. On time, every day, like a swiss clock, or whichever country that does these super reliable & accurate clocks.
Today I arrived early just to make sure I sit in the front row. Even though no one is planning on these seats. There are not many weirdos where I work. Anyway, I’m 5 min early. My seat is free. People start to get on the bus. My hopes are fulfilled. No one is trying to seat next to me, and off we go.
He’s right there. Wow. I mean, he’s right there! I got 1 hour of honk free and all I want is to find out what’s his secret. What is he on.
I argue with myself whether I should say something. To him. He must know that someone is noticing he never honks. Almost. But it’s weird. But I want to say SOMETHING. I can’t just leave it at that. What if he quits? What if I never see him again?
